Students Take On SPURA
At first glance, the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area (SPURA) seems to be used primarily as a parking lot. But, as students in The New School's City Studio course have discovered, there is much more to SPURA than meets the eye.

A New Challenge
A new project is giving students an opportunity to launch their own experiments in public engagement. The New Challenge, sponsored by the university’s cross-divisional Social Innovation Initiative, offers funding of up to $10,000 to student projects that address local or global community challenges in innovative ways.

“As the intellectual, economic, and cultural center of South Africa and the gateway to the rest of Africa, Johannesburg was the perfect setting for the 2012 session,” said Elzbieta Matynia, director of the TCDS. “Johannesburg’s incredible recent political and cultural transformations profoundly influenced and colored our discussions on the state of global society.”
