Congratulations to NSSR Mellon Interdisciplinary Postdoctoral Fellow in Sociology and Politics, Meral Çinar, who has won the Sabanci award along with her husband Kursat Çinar for her essay entitled “Building Democracy to Last: The Turkish Experience in Comparative Perspective.” Establishing democratic norms is not just a matter of elections and representation. It is also a matter of ensuring that power, even when gained through legitimate elections, does not devolve into a tyranny of the majority. Investigating this issue within the context of the Turkish experience with democracy is the topic of the 2013 Sakip Sabanci International Research Award, sponsored by Sabanci University in Istanbul. As protests flare across Turkey, the importance of this topic is clear. For more information, check out the Sabanci website here.
*An earlier version of this post did not include mention of Dr. Cinar’s affiliation with the Sociology department. She has been teaching courses in Sociology for both the NSSR and Lang.
