The Feminist Collective and New School Community Take Back the Night

Last night students, faculty and staff from The New School joined in solidarity for a march through the streets of the Union Square neighborhood to “Take Back the Night” and make our community safer for all. Annual Take Back the Night events were co-sponsored by New School’s Feminist Collective, the Wellness and Health Promotion program, and Residence Life.

Take Back the Night originated in the 1970′s as a reclaiming of public space and stance against male violence. According to Wikipedia, “The first known Take Back the Night march in the United States was organized in San Francisco, California on November 4, 1978, by Women Against Violence in Pornography and Media and marched through the red-light district of San Francisco in protest of rape and pornography, which they identified with the sexualized subordination of women.”

The recent New School events included the march and was followed by a candlelight vigil on campus, after which survivors of sexual assault and their allies shared testimonials.
