Messages to the Community

Yesterday’s Election

Today, our sidewalks, subways, hallways, and workspaces are filled with reactions, interpretations, and raw emotion in response to yesterday’s historic election. There is a pervasive sense that our country is on the cusp of unprecedented change.

Faculty, students, and staff at The New School are rapidly processing the events of the last 24 hours. We are reminded of our fundamental mission and how critical it is, now more than ever, to prepare students to understand, contribute to, and succeed in a rapidly changing society and to use their creativity, knowledge, and convictions to make the world a better and more just place.

Each one of us is attracted to The New School and New York City for a particular set of reasons, but among them is a common thread: We have all chosen to be part of a creative and intellectual community that embraces diversity and seeks positive social change.

I believe in our collective aspiration and resilience at The New School. I encourage you to use your talents and intellect in the coming days and months to learn from this experience and to create solutions that better our school, country and global community.

David E. Van Zandt, President
