Coronavirus / Covid-19 Update: Important Information Regarding University Travel

Given the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The New School is taking the additional precaution of suspending international university-related travel through the end of the semester. Consistent with this decision, international travel will not be paid for or reimbursed by the university during this period. This is an evolving situation, and we will update our policy as necessary.

We recognize that this may be a disappointing change for some who were looking forward to international travel related to their research or professional work. We appreciate your understanding and patience. Universities, organizations, and businesses around the globe are experiencing challenges and making similar decisions at this time. We believe you will be met with understanding and flexibility by your international partners when you reach out to them to let them know you are cancelling or postponing your travel plans.

Temporarily Suspended Travel

  • University international business travel: Suspended until the end of the semester
  • University-sponsored international travel by groups or individuals for academic study or projects, research, conferences, or events: Suspended until the end of the semester

Exemption Requests

There may be very specific instances for which an exception to this temporary policy would be considered. If you believe you have a unique situation that may warrant an exception, you may request a review via this link.

A Note on Study Abroad

Students studying abroad should remain in contact with their deans’ offices. While study abroad students in Italy, South Korea, and Japan have been advised to depart those countries, others are well situated in their host countries and will remain there.

Advice Regarding Personal Travel

For those in our community considering personal travel to international destinations, be aware that travel restrictions can change rapidly and may impact your plans. You might encounter challenges departing a country or face difficulties when you try to return. If you travel internationally, please allow extra travel time and stay up to date on developments at your destination as well as in the country to which you are returning. We especially encourage international students to consult with International Student and Scholar Services if they plan to travel internationally.

Members of our community who return to our New York or Paris campuses from areas with Level 3 travel advisories should self-quarantine for 14 days before returning to campus, per CDC guidelines. Please monitor your temperature and contact your health provider or Student Health Services in the event that you develop a fever of 100 degrees Fahrenheit or higher or respiratory symptoms. We know there are questions and concerns, and our staff are here to help.
