A Message to CoPA Students

Dear students,

I hope that you are staying safe and prioritizing your health and well-being at this time. Across Mannes, Jazz, and Drama, we remain ready to respond to your concerns and questions. During the spring break week, CoPA staff presence at Arnhold Hall will be limited, as most staff are now working remotely. Please know that all members of the staff are still available to you via email in the regular channels you have always used to communicate with them.

To clarify, the current status of changes to the academic calendar for the coming weeks is as follows:

March 16-22: Spring Break

March 23-29: Study Week

March 30-April 12: Courses resume online

Many questions have arisen about what will happen on April 13, in the event that The New School decides to re-open for in person classes. To clarify, at this time we are not delivering in-person classes through April 12 and have not yet made decisions about the remainder of the semester.

Many of you are currently making decisions regarding  travel both international and domestic. The question continues to arise:

What will happen if I leave the country? Can I make progress on my courses if I can not make it back into the country after April 12?

There are two parts to the answer:

  1. Whatever decision you make regarding travel, we will ensure that you can continue to make progress in your courses. If you choose to leave the country and can not re-enter by April 13, we will work with you to make sure that you can make progress via online and remote learning. Further if you decide not to return for the remainder of the semester, we will still work with you to make sure you can make progress toward your degree and graduate on time.
  2. The impact of traveling this time on your visa and international student status is not fully clear at this time. However, we do have resources to help you make decisions regarding international travel. To learn more about how online classes will affect your student status, please see the university FAQs for international students. If you have more specific questions, ISSS advisors are available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. for virtual advising.

Please be in contact with us, the College of Performing Arts Deans, if you have questions about how to proceed with your academic plans. We will help you to navigate through your questions for the best possible answers that we can provide at this time.

For the latest and most comprehensive information from The New School, visit www.newschool.edu/coronavirus/ and read the CoPA FAQs for students and for faculty/staff.

We are prioritizing our community safety, community health, and your academic progress. You can reach out to me, or any of the deans at this time regarding anything that may be on your mind. We are here with you in these trying times.

To contact the College of Performing Arts Deans, write to copadeans@newschool.edu. We are waiting to hear from you.

Thank you.
Richard
