All Classes for the Remainder of the Semester will be Conducted Online
The rapidly developing measures globally and in New York City to stem the tide of COVID-19 call for new actions by The New School community. In recent weeks, we have taken a number of important steps to limit crowds and reduce exposure and risk on our campus. As local, national, global measures to protect community health have become increasingly far-reaching and urgent, it is necessary for our university to go even further.
Classes
All classes for the remainder of the semester will be conducted online. We recognize the high value of in-person, on-site delivery for many of our programs (studio, conservatory, and others). Our faculty and academic leaders are working rapidly to shift to modalities that will ensure we can meet the learning objectives of these programs as best as possible in this unprecedented situation.
Residence Halls
As an additional step to reduce on-campus activity, we are assisting students who are ready to move out of the residence halls. Residential Education staff will be communicating with students to help them manage their moves and to be sure that students who need to remain on campus are well supported.
Buildings
Campus building hours are being adjusted beginning Wednesday, March 18; please check online for the most up-to-date information.
Staff
Staff should continue working remotely or on flexible schedules or other arrangements based on discussions with your supervisors and managers. Please visit the HR website with new information about Sick and Family Leave, and Tips for Working Remotely.
Programs and Events
Public programming and special events are cancelled through the end of May.
Commencement
We have not yet made a decision about Commencement. It is such a meaningful event in the life cycle of our graduates, and we want to give it the most serious consideration before making any decision. We expect to decide within the next few weeks.
Thank you
These decisions are extremely difficult ones to make. We ask for everyone’s help, understanding, and continued patience and flexibility in the coming days. It is imperative that we all do our part, as an institution and as individuals, to help manage through the present public health crisis. We will be doing everything we can to keep our wonderful community together virtually and we are eager to welcome you all back to the campus as soon as possible. We are deeply grateful to everyone for their creativity and forbearance. These past few weeks have been a powerful reminder of just how connected we are to one another and to the university.
