Messages to the Community

Coronavirus / Covid-19 Update

There are several new updates for our campus community today as we fluidly respond to the current global health crisis.

Residence Halls

Students in the residence halls are being asked to move out on an expedited schedule and all but those with extenuating circumstances will be moved out by Monday, March 23. Our staff is continuing to support students through this disruption. Prorated refunds will be issued and emergency assistance will be provided for those experiencing hardship. Residential students should watch for direct communication from our Housing staff.

Staff

Employees who are able to work remotely should continue to do so. We realize that remote work is not an option for some of our staff. We are committed to ensuring pay continuity for all employees. This means that salaried employees, hourly employees, part-time and student employees will continue to be paid per their normal work schedule, even if it is not possible for them to fulfill their work requirements remotely or in other ways. The most up-to-date information will be posted on the Human Resources website.

Buildings

As of Thursday, March 26, most campus buildings will close until further notice. Students, faculty and staff should make arrangements to collect course materials, musical instruments, personal belongings and anything else necessary for remote work. Building hours during which materials can be retrieved will be posted Wednesday on the Buildings website and updated as needed. At this time, the plan is for the University Center, Arnhold Hall, and 2 West 13th Street to remain open on a limited schedule. Mail service will be suspended concurrently with the closing of 55 West 13th Street. Please contact senders directly to make any necessary alternative arrangements.

We will continue to provide updates as we move through the present situation. Despite the enormous disruptions to our work, learning, and daily lives, the New School community has responded with true resilience and commitment. In the coming weeks and months, we can expect to see continuing dramatic changes, and eventually we will move out of the present crisis.

What is clear from this moment is that it is both necessary and possible to create real change in how we teach, learn, collaborate, share information, and operate as a community of higher learning. Our mission remains strong, relevant, and important, and we will continue to redefine it to meet rapidly changing needs. We can do this.
