Enhanced Student Emergency Fund Reopens Today
Dear Faculty and Staff,
The Student Emergency Fund application process reopens at 2:30 p.m. EDT today (Friday, April 24). We have informed all students who have not already applied.
To ensure the distribution of funds in accordance with federal guidelines, we have created two application forms:
- All students in need who are US citizens and study on campus are eligible for CARES Act funds and should submit their request via this CARES Act funding application form.
- All other students in need are eligible for university support and should submit their request via this University funding application form.
Our goal is to support as many students as we can to the greatest extent possible, but we are limited by CARES Act regulations in the distribution of those funds. In response, we have committed to using all university-based emergency funds to support students who are ineligible for federal CARES Act aid. However, because the amount of university funding is significantly less than the amount of CARES Act funding, awards from the university fund will be capped at $750.
Here is how funding has been allocated to date:
- The New School has earmarked $1 million of university funds to support CARES Act-ineligible students. To date, we have received 798 applications from CARES Act-ineligible students, and we have allocated $600,000 to assist them. This leaves us with $400,000 remaining to support about 480 more students in need with awards of $750 or less.
- The New School has received $2.498 million dollars of federal CARES Act funding. To date, we have received applications from 1,045 CARES Act-eligible students in need and allocated $1.53 million dollars to assist them. This leaves us with approximately $950,000 to support 475+ more eligible students in need.
Awards are being distributed on a first-come, first-served basis according to self-identified need until funds are exhausted. Once funds are exhausted, we will close the emergency fund until it is replenished.
Please remember that emergency funding can be used to support housing, food, health care, course materials, technology, and/or child care, and cannot be used to pay tuition or fees. Student Success, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, and Business & Finance have been working diligently to process students’ requests. You can learn more in our FAQ.
We understand that this funding will not meet all of our students’ full needs, but we hope it will assist with the most pressing emergent needs for a greater number of people. We are committed to supporting our students through this extraordinarily difficult time and to helping those who are facing unanticipated challenges.
