Messages to the Community

A Message from the Co-Chairs of the Provost Search Advisory Committee

As President McBride shared in his September 18 message, the Provost Search Advisory Committee will help guide and shape a rigorous search process, review candidates, and recommend finalists to be the next Provost of The New School. We are honored to take on this important work and share the first update about our process.

The Search Advisory Committee held its kick-off meeting last week. We agreed that one of the most important early aspects of our work will be to gather insight from members of The New School community. Input from various stakeholder groups will help us understand the range of perspectives on the opportunities and challenges for the next Provost and the qualities and characteristics the next Provost should possess. This input will directly inform the development of the position profile.

The Committee is committed to leading a search process that reflects the university’s values of equity, inclusion, and social justice as our ongoing priority. To that end, as we prepare to evaluate candidates, the Committee has made a commitment to complete training on equity and anti-bias in hiring. This work will empower us to recruit a diverse pool of candidates, and to recognize and challenge unconscious assumptions and responses throughout the process.

We are also committed to keeping the community informed throughout the search process while still respecting the confidentiality necessary to conduct a successful search. In addition to our periodic email updates, this website will serve as a primary resource for information related to the search.

Our next milestone will be the completion of the position profile. We look forward to sharing that next month.

On behalf of the Search Advisory Committee,

Rachel Schreiber
