Update on the Provost Search

A Message from the Co-Chairs of the Provost Search Advisory Committee

Dear members of The New School community,

Before we break for the holiday, we want to share a brief progress report on behalf of the Provost Search Advisory Committee. Over the past month, the Committee has been actively engaged in inquiry sessions with faculty, staff, students, and Trustees. It was important to the Committee to invite and listen to a wide range of perspectives on the opportunities, priorities, and challenges our next Provost should be prepared to address. We are grateful to the many people who took the time to participate in more than 20 of these dialogues. In addition to hosting a number of open sessions, we also spoke with groups including:

  • Members of the staff, student, and faculty senates
  • The Provost’s Council (which includes staff who report directly to the Provost)
  • The Executive Deans and College Deans
  • The President’s Leadership Team
  • Members of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees
  • Student Success and Strategic Enrollment Management Staff (as these areas newly report to the Provost)

At these sessions, we discussed prompts that addressed the opportunities facing the new Provost, the distinctive nature of The New School, and the characteristics, skills, and experience that will be valuable for the next Provost. As we had promised, we are compiling and organizing what we heard so that we can share these insights with the university community.

We are also using this input to shape the position profile that we will share broadly to help us attract a broad and diverse pool of outstanding candidates. We invite early nominations, inquiries, or expressions of interest, which can be emailed to thenewschoolprovost@spencerstuart.com and will be treated confidentially.

On behalf of the Search Committee, we send our best wishes for the holidays and New Year.
