University Statement About Anti-Asian Violence

A message from Dr. Dwight A. McBride, President and University Professor, and Stephanie Browner, Interim Provost and Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs

The increase in hate crimes, discrimination, and harassment against Asians and Asian Americans in New York City and throughout the country is reprehensible and must not be tolerated. We recognize the stress, fear, and anguish that these attacks have caused the Asian and Asian American community and we proclaim that The New School community stands in solidarity. At The New School, we draw strength from our extraordinary diversity—of backgrounds, viewpoints, orientations, experiences, and identities. And it is in that diversity that we must stand together, with and for one another, as a united community to ensure we have a safe and inclusive environment for all of our students, staff, and faculty. As we have done in the past against other targeted racialized acts of hate and violence, we will continue to serve as an example of acceptance and tolerance for people of all religions, races, and identities, and reassert our commitment to transcending hate and bias, and achieving social justice.

The New School will continue to prioritize the health and well-being of our students, staff, and faculty. We will ensure that we maintain and create inclusive spaces free of discrimination, harassment, and bias on our campus, and we will ensure that we prioritize remedies that protect and unite our global community.

Anyone who believes they have experienced bias, discrimination, or harassment on our campus is urged to report it. Students who need support can email studentsupport@newschool.edu. Employees can seek additional support through the Employee Assistance Program.
