Solidarity and Support in Response to the Crisis in Ukraine
A message from Dr. Dwight A. McBride, President and University Professor
Dear members of The New School community,
As the unfolding crisis in Ukraine enters its third week and the path to peaceful resolution remains unclear, the impact–political, economic, and humanitarian–is being felt around the world. The accounts of human suffering, displacement, and insecurity are harrowing. Our hearts go out to the people of Ukraine and to the people of Russia who are protesting their government’s actions at enormous personal risk. As an academic institution, we have been especially focused on the many international students in Ukraine and Russia who have faced uncertainty, danger, and discrimination as they have sought safety.
In these difficult and frightening times, it is heartening to learn the ways people across The New School are connecting, reflecting, and expressing solidarity through scholarship, dialogue, creative expression, and public engagement. I’ve included below just a few examples that have been shared. As a university founded on democratic principles and oriented to social justice and creating positive change, we are guided by our academic mission and institutional character to channel our efforts toward peace.
We are also guided by our sense of community care. Our internationally diverse university includes students, faculty, and staff with ties to countries most directly affected by the crisis. It is important to recognize that even those who are not impacted in direct or obvious ways may also be experiencing distress. Let’s be sure to reach out and lend support–as peers, teachers, colleagues, mentors, advisors, and friends. In the words of Coretta Scott King, “The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members.”
The coming days will bring more difficult news, to be sure. In these times, I am especially grateful for the humanity and deep compassion of The New School community.
