Announcing NSSR Dean Transition in 2023

A Message From Dr. Renée T. White, Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Dear Members of The New School Community,

I write to share that William Milberg has announced that he will step down as Dean of The New School for Social Research at the end of the 2022-2023 academic year.

Over two terms and nearly ten years as Dean, Milberg has prioritized interdisciplinary collaboration and student and faculty support. He has overseen the creation of several institutions, including the Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility; the Graduate Institute for Design, Ethnography and Social Thought; the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies; the Henry H. Arnhold Forum on Global Challenges; and Public Seminar, an online forum. Additionally, he has increased funding for graduate student fellowships and faculty research support; under Dean Milberg’s leadership, NSSR has raised over $65 million.

Dean Milberg will return to the Economics faculty at NSSR and Lang next fall, where he serves as Professor of Economics, and will continue his involvement with the Heilbroner Center for Capitalism Studies.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Dean Milberg for his dedicated service and stewardship of NSSR. I am deeply grateful for his leadership in fostering a community of rigorous scholarship and engagement throughout his time as Dean. I join our students, faculty, and staff in extending my appreciation.

As we plan for a smooth transition in leadership, I am pleased to share that a search committee for the next Dean of NSSR has been formed with membership from across the college, including faculty, staff, and students, as well as university leadership. This committee was endorsed by the full NSSR faculty and is committed to communicating about the search process on a regular basis with the NSSR community. I am grateful to Dean Christoph Cox and Professor Alice Crary, who have agreed to serve as co-chairs of the committee, and to the search committee, listed below:

Christoph Cox, Eugene Lang College for Liberal Arts, Dean, Co-Chair
Alice Crary, NSSR, University Distinguished Professor, Co-Chair
Jay Bernstein, NSSR, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy
Paulo dos Santos, NSSR, Associate Professor of Economics
Abou Farman, NSSR, Associate Professor of Anthropology
Mark W. Frazier, NSSR, Professor and Chair of Politics
Robert Kostrzewa, NSSR, Vice Dean
Desiree LaVecchia, NSSR, Executive Assistant to the Dean
Inessa Medzhibovskaya, NSSR, Professor of Liberal Studies and Literary Studies
Joan Miller, NSSR, Professor of Psychology
Vidya Ravilochan, NSSR, PhD student, Philosophy
Lisa Rubin, NSSR, Associate Professor of Psychology
Julia Sonnevend, NSSR, Associate Professor of Sociology
Christopher Thompson, NSSR, MA student, Anthropology
Jeremy Varon, NSSR, Professor of History

Central to this search process is a commitment to identify a deeply experienced leader for NSSR. The committee will hold community listening sessions about the dean search process with faculty, staff, and students. As the work of the search committee advances, more information about the process will be shared throughout the semester.

Please join me in thanking Dean Milberg for his service.
