Demonstrations on Campus
This afternoon a group of approximately 100 students gathered in the University Center and other facilities, blocking entry to the buildings despite being informed that this was in clear violation of campus policies for demonstrations and the Student Code of Conduct.
The New School recognizes and respects the right of students to peacefully demonstrate on university premises. However, all community members are responsible for abiding by the university’s codes, policies and protocols related to protests and demonstrations. These policies make clear that the time, place and manner of exercising those rights is subject to regulation to ensure the safety of our community and prevent interference in the normal functions of the university.
We want to be clear: the university is committed to safe access to all campus spaces, while allowing space for peaceful demonstration.
In order to maintain campus safety and adhere to demonstration guidelines, students obstructing access may be subject to sanctions under the student code of conduct, with the penalties determined by a hearing process. We strive for a restorative and participatory process, yet hold students accountable for their impact on our community.
