Messages to the Community

Location Updates for some Parsons, College of Performing Arts, and Schools of Public Engagement Recognition Ceremonies

A Message from Dr. Renée T. White, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

To the New School Community,

‌We look forward to celebrating our graduating students with our extended community of family, friends, faculty, and staff next week. Commencement is an important time for our community to collectively honor and recognize the academic achievements of our newest graduates.

‌Our community has been deeply impacted by events on campus. As we seek restorative solutions to move forward, we remain connected in our commitment to celebrate the incredible work our students have accomplished at The New School across all of our colleges.

‌To ensure the best possible Commencement experience for our community, college ceremonies scheduled to take place in the University Center will be relocated off campus. This decision was made in an effort to recognize and celebrate our students in a safe and neutral space as we face an ever-changing situation on campus.

All original student and guest registrations will be honored, and scheduled ceremony times have been slightly adjusted. This change in venue impacts the following ceremonies, which will now be hosted at Marble Collegiate Church, located at 1 West 29th Street at the northwest corner of 29th Street and 5th Avenue:

‌College of Performing Arts Ceremony

‌Parsons School of Design Ceremonies

‌Schools of Public Engagement Ceremonies

All other college recognition ceremonies will remain at their originally scheduled locations, with the exception of the Parsons MS Strategic Design and Management Ceremony, which will relocate from Tishman Auditorium in the University Center to the Auditorium at 66 W. 12th Street. University Commencement will take place as scheduled on Friday, May 17 at the Louis Armstrong Stadium at the USTA National Tennis Center in Queens.

‌In identifying an alternate venue, we strove to work with an organization committed to our student values. Marble Collegiate Church is committed to practicing their social justice praxis, and to providing a welcoming space for the LGBTQIA+ community. They host events ranging from racial justice conferences to various art exhibitions (the current exhibition features artists from the AAPI community in honor of AAPI Heritage Month) and are affiliated with two Protestant Christian denominations that have publicly called for a ceasefire in the Israeli and Palestinian conflict.

‌Students have emphasized the importance of these celebrations and how meaningful they are to them, their families, and the communities that have supported their academic journey at The New School. As we approach the end of the semester, staff, faculty, and deans are working together to create a safe and uplifting Commencement experience for all of our graduates and guests.

We look forward to celebrating all of our graduates at these college recognition ceremonies and our University Commencement ceremonies.‌

‌Visit the Commencement website to view the full schedule of Commencement ceremonies. Dean’s offices and the Provost’s Office will continue to provide detailed information over the coming days.
