Updated University Policy on Law Enforcement Access and Travel and Other Guidance for International Faculty and Staff

As we continue to experience challenges and uncertainty, The New School is focused on supporting our community. This includes ensuring international students, faculty, and staff feel safe, secure and informed. We thank all of you who are checking in with friends, students and colleagues and hope you will read below for information about the university’s updated policy on law enforcement access and an FAQ addressing travel and other concerns for our international faculty and staff.

University Policy on Handling Law Enforcement, Warrants, Subpoenas, and Service of Process

We know there is a great deal of interest in the university’s policies surrounding access to information and campus spaces by law enforcement. In response to those questions, we want to make the community aware of this recently published policy that reflects our longstanding guidance to employees relating to law enforcement and receipt of certain legal documents.

The University Policy on Handling of Law Enforcement, Warrants, Subpoenas, and Service of Process outlines the established protocols that guide our response in situations involving visits from law enforcement and delivery of certain legal documents. It clearly defines when and how a government agent—such as a federal or state officer, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers, or a similarly situated individual—can access campus spaces and outlines the process for requesting access.

FAQ for International Faculty and Staff

As we shared last week, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently issued an Interim Final Rule that reinforces and updates the longstanding requirement for noncitizens to register with the federal government and carry proof of registration at all times. Our Human Resources team has shared guidance with faculty and staff who may be impacted by this change to make sure they are aware of the updated rule and can take any necessary steps to ensure compliance. If you have any questions about how this change might affect you or need additional guidance, please contact the HR team at HRHelp@newschool.edu.

The university has also created an FAQ for international faculty and staff to help ensure they are prepared for travel outside the United States and other situations that may arise. We will continue to update the FAQ as new information becomes available.

Please visit our Supporting our Community webpage for important information, updates, resources, and support for students, faculty, and staff.
