Anticipated Demonstration Activity and Temporary Changes to Campus Building Access September 12, 2024

In anticipation of demonstration activities across New York City tomorrow, we are writing to make you aware of temporary changes to building access on our campus.

We have learned that the national chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine will hold a march tomorrow through downtown Manhattan that will culminate at approximately 3:30pm at The New School. We anticipate that the New York Police Department (NYPD) will be present from the beginning and throughout the entire march, in keeping with standard NYPD practices, and that a large crowd may gather outside of the University Center building.

We support our community’s right to peacefully protest and express themselves. At the same time, we want to remind everyone of the university’s codes, policies and protocols for our community standards. These policies do not permit harassment, intimidation, or hate speech; conduct that interferes unreasonably with the activities of other persons; or disruptions to teaching, learning and other university operations.

To ensure the safety of our community, the following procedures will be in place tomorrow between 2:30pm – 8:00pm at the University Center, 66 Fifth Avenue, 2 West 13th Street, and 72 Fifth Avenue:

  • ID checks will occur outside these campus buildings.
  • All persons entering these buildings will be required to show their face to match their ID photo.
  • No guests will be permitted in the buildings listed above between 2:30pm and 8:00pm. This includes New School alumni.
    • Faculty who have planned guests scheduled to be on campus to support courses and instructional activities should email campussafety@newschool.edu to arrange for building entry.

Maintaining a safe, civil, and respectful campus environment for all members of our community is our top priority. We will continue to work with our students, faculty, and staff to foster safety and belonging for all.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
