Announcing Leadership Changes in the Provost’s Office
A Message from Dr. Renée T. White, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce some recent leadership changes within the Provost’s Office that will enhance our efforts and help to ensure robust support, communication, and coordination across different areas.
In recognition of her outstanding leadership and demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and success at The New School, Maggie Koozer has been promoted to Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, with oversight of the areas of Curriculum, Learning and Academic Affairs (CLAA) and Faculty Affairs units. These two areas of the Provost’s Office, which currently work closely together, have now been formally brought together under the same leadership umbrella. In her new position, Maggie will assume a lead role in implementing strategic goals and objectives related to academic programming and initiatives, serving as a partner to the deans, institutional leaders, and university committees. A member of the Provost’s Senior Leadership Team and Deputy Academic Officer, she will continue to provide leadership, vision, and coordination across all areas of academic affairs at The New School while working to foster collaboration, build connections, and create and facilitate new approaches to enhancing faculty recruitment and retention success. Along with her depth of experience, Maggie brings with her a great spirit of creativity and collegiality and I look forward to continuing our partnership in this important work.
After serving in the role for four years, Michael Schober has stepped down as Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. During his tenure, Michael has done much to advance the work of faculty affairs at The New School while also navigating the challenges of the pandemic and several leadership transitions, always centering equity and faculty development and support. He has worked to clarify and streamline full-time faculty review practices and to integrate full- and part-time faculty processes within the Provost’s Office. He has chaired or co-chaired several committees, including serving as tri-chair of the Middle States Self-Study Re-accreditation Steering Committee and as chair of the Provost’s Office Faculty Affairs Committee, and he has overseen the Libraries, Collections, and Academic Services, the Office of Research Support (ORS), and Faculty Development, as well as serving as a primary liaison for several of the university’s research institutes, among many other responsibilities. Michael brings a service-oriented approach to his work and has closely collaborated with the University Faculty Senate on initiatives that prioritize faculty wellbeing, elevate faculty work, and promote shared governance. As Michael transitions away to an exciting new project—serving as a half-time Senior Research Fellow at the US Census Bureau for two years, under the provisions of the Intergovernmental Personnel Act—and returns to the faculty, he has graciously agreed to serve in an interim part-time capacity as Senior Advisor to the Provost for Faculty Affairs for the spring semester. In this capacity, he will focus on a number of discrete projects, including serving as a strategic advisor for all faculty policies, issues, and initiatives and continued leadership of ORS as we close out the search for the next Vice Provost for Research and work to hire a new Assistant Director of Research & Compliance Administration.
I am also pleased to announce that we are launching a search to fill the new position of Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs, a reimagining of the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs position that will report to the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs. This full-time role is open to full-time faculty members appointed at the associate or full professor level, and is responsible for leading and overseeing key areas related to full- and part-time faculty, including full-time faculty searches, reviews for reappointment and promotion for full-time faculty and part-time faculty applying for multi-year status, compliance with collective bargaining agreements, development and implementation of policies and procedures that impact full- and part-time faculty, and support for faculty in professional development. We encourage eligible faculty members to read more about the position and consider applying at the link below. You may also submit nominations for the role by emailing provost@newschool.edu.
Please join me in welcoming Maggie to her new role and in thanking Michael for his significant contributions to the Provost’s Office over the years.
