Messages to the Community

Coronavirus / Covid-19 Update

We have learned in the past day that several members of The New School community have tested positive for COVID-19. An increase in occurrences is to be expected as the curve of the virus in New York moves upward and testing is expanding.

As COVID-19 is actively circulating in the community, everyone should act as if they have been exposed and behave accordingly. As a reminder, most people with COVID-19 develop mild to moderate illness without the need for medical care. Those with underlying health conditions are at higher risk for developing serious illness. There is also evidence that younger people are getting COVID-19 at higher rates and experiencing more severe illness than previously thought.

If you believe you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or if you have symptoms:

  • Please consult the CDC website or your medical provider for guidance.

If you have tested positive for COVID-19:

  • Be sure to follow medical advice for self-care, including isolating to prevent spreading the illness to others.
  • Your medical provider, or Student Health Services (if you are a student), is responsible for notifying the New York City Department of Health.
  • Individuals who have been diagnosed are encouraged to reach out to those with whom they have recently come into close, sustained contact.
  • Notify your faculty member, manager, or supervisor as soon as possible.
  • Be assured that The New School will respect your privacy and applicable laws, and will not disclose personal information.

If you learn that one of your students or someone on your faculty or staff team has tested positive for COVID-19:

  • Notify your dean or department leadership as soon as possible.
  • Follow their guidance regarding responsible communication with others at The New School who may need to know.

Everyone:

The most important thing we can all do to limit the spread of COVID-19 is to follow community health guidelines.

  • Practice safe social distancing.
  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for a least 20 seconds. If water is not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover your mouth/nose with a tissue or sleeve when coughing or sneezing. Immediately throw the tissue in the garbage.
  • Clean surfaces that are frequently touched, such as counters, doorknobs, bathroom fixtures and phones.

We remain actively focused on the unfolding situation and will continue to make appropriate decisions and update the community. Please also check the university’s COVID-19 website for helpful information.
