New School in the Community

The New School’s Block Party Connects the University with Greenwich Village

On August 30, The New School kicked off the new school year with its annual Block Party held on 13th Street, between Fifth Avenue and University Place. Students, faculty, staff and our Greenwich Village neighbors mingled and enjoyed snacks prepared by local businesses, fun activities like skee ball and VR rides, and participated in voter registration and health information drives.

This fun-filled, one-block street party is organized and hosted by the university’s Student Leadership and Involvement. The department works year-round planning the event, from evaluating the previous year’s successes, to visiting all the businesses and residential buildings on the block in the weeks leading up to the event to ensure everyone is properly informed about the upcoming festivities. “In addition to providing students with an opportunity to socialize with each other, we consider Block Party as an opportunity to connect with our Greenwich Village neighbors,” said Megan Kielty, Director of Student Leadership and Involvement. “Many local vendors provide food samples, and this year we even had residents who live on that block join the celebration. It is truly a great opportunity to get out there and enjoy free food and free activities before the busy-ness of the semester starts!”

Block Party would not be a success without the contributions of the many local businesses that join us to welcome back our students. We would like to give special thanks to our many partners that joined us this year, including: Agata & Valentina, Bareburger, Beam Street Dental, The Bean, Blick, Breads Bakery, Chameleon Cold Brew, Eva’s Kitchen, Food For All, Garden of Eden, Grom, Harmless Harvest, Insomnia, Just Salad, Lifethyme Market, Mint Kitchen, New York Health & Racquet Club, New York Library, Nutella, The Nugget Spot, Ovee, Red Market, Ritas, Thomas Taft Salon, and Westside Market.
