The New School Celebrates LGBTQIA+ Pride Month in NYC

LGBTQIA+ Pride Month traces its origins to Greenwich Village, when what began as the Stonewall Uprising of 1969 became an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years, NYC Pride March has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect.

This year, more than 100 New School students, faculty, staff, and alumni representing all five colleges, Continuing and Professional Education, several centers and institutes and various administrative departments joined the NYC Pride March on Sunday, June 25. Notably, many attendees were accompanied by their families, friends, and partners who marched together during the parade.

The university’s participation was coordinated by The New School Pride Planning Committee, a dedicated volunteer group consisting of students, faculty, staff, and alumni, warmly welcomes all members of The New School community. In addition to organizing the university’s representation at the march, the committee worked to promote the Re:Generations exhibit—at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Gallery, 66 Fifth Ave, from now until July 12th. The exhibit, in partnership with the Stonewall National Monument Visitors Center, showcases student work that explores the impact of the Stonewall Riots today.

While The New School Pride Committee was specifically formed this year to coordinate the planning and coordination of The New School contingency at the NYC Pride March, the group is looking for ways to help organize and support other New School programs and events on and off campus.
