Centering Justice: A Conversation with Environmental Justice Pioneer Beverly Wright
The Tishman Environment and Design Center at The New School invites you to an inspiring conversation with Dr. Beverly Wright, the founder and executive director of the Deep South Center for Environmental Justice, the first-ever environmental justice (EJ) center in the U.S. Join us for this special event on January 18, 2024 at 7 pm EST at the Tishman Auditorium, 63 5th Avenue, New York, NY.
Wright is a legendary EJ leader, scholar, advocate, and author, and is a member of the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council. Born and raised in New Orleans, she has experienced and witnessed the polluting effects of Cancer Alley—an 85-mile stretch of land between Baton Rouge and New Orleans that is home to over 150 petrochemical plants and refineries. Through her decades of research and community organizing, Wright has noted how the effects of these polluting industries are made worse by an absence of community input. She has developed the “communiversity model,” a partnership between communities and universities that integrates community concerns and real-life experiences into research and policymaking for academic educators and researchers.
