New School Exhibits, Podcasts, and Radio Shows to Inspire and Entertain You Through Winter Break

New School faculty and staff have created several projects and works to keep you entertained and engaged during the winter break. Spend some time exploring AI art and design projects or listening to engaging stories about culinary traditions, rave culture in New York City, urban agricultural policies and more.

The New School Art/Design + AI Exhibition

The New School Art/Design + AI exhibit features work by Parsons students, independent designers and artists who create art at the intersection of design and technology. These emerging artists and designers employ machine-enabled techniques to provoke dialogue about artistic agency, systemic biases, the nature of time and reality, and the role of humans in the creative process. A variety of themes are explored in the show, including identity and representation, which are examined in both personal and interpersonal settings. The exhibition is on view at the Arnold & Sheila Aronson Galleries, 66 5th Ave, New York, New York 10011, now through January 5, 2024.

CAMPOUT HEARSAY TALK SERIES: ‘RAVING’
McKenzie Wark, Professor of Culture and Media

 Professor Wark joins the Honcho Campout podcast to discuss the revelatory truths and power of ‘Raving’. Wark’s recent book, Raving, portrays the revitalized underground queer and trans rave culture in New York City, and imagines raving as a “timely aesthetic for dancing in the ruins of this collapsing capital.”

BUDDING TASTE
Fa-Tai Shieh, Food Studies faculty member

Budding Taste, a podcast produced and hosted by Food Studies faculty member Fa-Tai Shieh (aka Kai Shay), examines the diet of everyday people from cultural, historical, and culinary perspectives. Growing out of the Food Studies course The Cultural History of Nutrition Professor Shieh teaches, the podcast features individuals from a variety of countries and cultures who discuss food traditions in their families and cultures and the way they relate to ideas about food in the United States.

Kristin Reynolds, Chair of Food Studies

Kristin Reynolds, the Chair of Food Studies, was a featured speaker at Cities@Tufts a colloquium held at Tufts University that focuses on civic democracy, ethnographic research, urban and community health, food justice and security, urban politics and economics, and social inequality. Reynolds discussed recent developments in urban agriculture practice and policy, their implications for racial and economic equity, and her current efforts to promote socially just urban agriculture policy through her Food and Social Justice Action Research Lab. The Colloquium is produced in collaboration with Shareable.

WNSR New School Radio, a student-run, web-based station, operates through a partnership between the WNSR student organization and The New School’s graduate and undergraduate classes. Recent series include Memories Through Sound: New School Students tell personal narratives through sound and New School: Arts & Culture.
