Live Performances Return at The Stone at The New School

The Stone at The New School’s Glassbox Theater has reopened its doors after a pandemic hiatus, bringing back the excitement of live performance. The landmark downtown performance space will continue its role serving as a hub for a wide range of experimental musicians and artists who defy conventional categorization. Upcoming November residencies include electro-acoustic composer, harpist and Guggenheim Fellow Zeena Parkins (November 4-6); guitarist, bagpiper, and founder of music performance series WOrK David Watson (November 11-13); and guitarist and composer Jon Madof (November 18-20).

“With great pleasure we are proud to announce that The Stone at The New School is reopening with a fabulous lineup of artists continuing The Stone’s tradition of presenting a wide range of creative musicians in a focused, respectful manner with little or no distraction. The Stone is and always will be a safe home for the mavericks, misfits and visionaries of the musical world, and is dedicated to presenting their cutting-edge music exactly as they envision it without compromise,” said John Zorn, founder and artistic director of The Stone.

Composer-performer Zorn founded The Stone in 2005. Over the years, the venue has presented a literal who’s who of experimental and avant-garde music, including many who received some of their first bookings before other venues would consider them, as well as those you would not ordinarily be able to witness in such an intimate environment through any other venue. After 13 years in the East Village, The Stone moved to The New School’s College of Performing Arts in 2018 where it occupies The Glassbox Theater in Arnhold Hall.

“In the relatively short amount of time that The Stone has been at The New School, it has quickly become a foundational element of who we are at the College of Performing Arts (CoPA) and we’ve gone so far as to create a new graduate program for the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music and Mannes School of Music that is dovetailed to the artists and programming of The Stone. It seems to me that The Stone may be more important than ever in the role it plays for access to this community of musical artists and we are thrilled to play our part in returning live music to downtown Manhattan,” said Richard Kessler, Executive Dean of CoPA.

Patrons attending performances at The Stone are recommended to register in advance. As a result of social distancing, the number of available seats for any given performance at The Stone will be 35, which is half of pre-pandemic capacity. Advance registrations will be held up until 8:20 pm at which time they will be released. Payment for tickets continues to be cash-only at the door.

Audience members must show proof of vaccination and ID, be masked at all times, and have had a negative PCR test within no more than seven days prior to the performance. Those who do not have proof of vaccine or proof of a negative PCR test will not be allowed into The Stone at The New School.
