Jackie Smith, Assistant Director, English Language Studies, smithj@newschool.edu
I have been in the field of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages for more than 30 years, most of that time as a teacher, and in the last several years as the Assistant Director of the ESL programs here at The New School. The favorite part of my job is working with our students and the wonderful teachers in our program. I love meeting everyone at the beginning of the semester at our Welcome Workshop, helping students through the registration and admissions process, and supporting their learning in every way that I can. Seeing the students demonstrate their talents at the Studio Expo and at Mannes musical performances is a true joy.

Charlotte Turnbull, Program Manager, English Language Studies, turnbulc@newschool.edu
Originally from Scotland, I moved to New York in 2016. When I’m not at work at The New School I love to cook. I’m also a member of New York Toastmasters, which I also recommend ESL students to try, to help improve your confidence and public speaking skills! It’s always fun meeting the new students each semester and helping them on their journey to Parsons, Mannes, culinary school or any other destination.

I graduated from Barnard in 2014 with a major in East Asian Studies. I work as an independent videographer and video editor, as well as assistants to various independent documentary filmmakers. I speak Mandarin, Japanese, and some Spanish! My academic interests are labor, food, infrastructure, technology, media, gender, and migration.

I am in the AAS Graphic Design program at Parsons. I have lived in various states and countries, and of course, love to travel and eat. Before coming to The New School, I worked at a non-profit in Baltimore, Maryland, and I still love going back there. My other interests include watching lots of television and movies, reading, learning violin (and music in general), and just learning as much as I can about the world. I am so happy to be a part of the ELS team, and grateful to meet new people everyday!

I am an undergraduate student at Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts at the New School. As a first generation American (parents are from Trinidad and Tobago) I have seen first hand how the lack of education affects people and communities in impoverished countries. This is why I plan on taking the skills and knowledge I am learning with a Global Studies major on an international level. I enjoy reading and writing, traveling, the color yellow and staying hydrated. As I was born and raised in Queens, I can attest the best coffee in New York is from Il Forno Bakery in Astoria.

I am a first-year M.A. student in the COPA Arts Management and Entrepreneurship program. I was born and raised in Mississauga, Canada, where I developed my passion for the arts, social justice, and travelling. I also love to cook, dance, read, and watch reality television. I moved to NYC five years ago and graduated from NYU Steinhardt’s Vocal Performance program in 2017. I have worked with several theater companies in the city as a performer and administrator and am very excited to join the ELS team!
