“To defend life from its conception. An inquiry in the use of language in abortion legalization struggles in Mexico”

In 2009, during a highly contested process in which an anti-abortion law was passed by the local congress of Jalisco, México, the pro-life activists that proposed the law amendment, repeatedly used the phrase to defend life from its conception (defender la vida desde su concepción, in Spanish) as their motto and slogan for their campaign. Backed by local Catholic and Christian churches, the campaign was ultimately successful in create a framework in which the debate around abortion was enclosed, in opposition to pro-choice slogan right to decide. In this regard, I want to investigate how that framework worked; which symbolic resources were used by the campaigners and to which structures of meaning they referred their discourse, as well as the socio-political contexts in which legalization of abortion struggles are inscribed, and ultimately bound part of the meaning.
