ACT-UAW–Part-Time Faculty Successor Contract Negotiations Update: Mediation Session 3

The New School and Local 7902 met with the federal mediator for a third day on December 4, 2022. The mediation session began at 2:00pm and concluded at approximately 6:00 pm. We greatly appreciate the mediator’s continued efforts to bring both parties closer together in our positions.

As previously reported, at Friday’s mediation session the union provided the university with an outline of some conceptual movement that they would be willing to make on several outstanding issues, including compensation and medical benefits. The university carefully considered these concepts and provided a complete response to those concepts during today’s session. Part of the university’s response today included advancing a concept (which would be a major concession by the university) for the union’s consideration.

There are creative ideas which we are offering for further thought and exploration. We look forward to continued dialogue with the union on the open issues. Our paramount consideration is to come up with ways to end the strike.

The union utilized the remainder of the session to consider the concept advanced by the university, and the university is hopeful the union will have an affirmative response at the next mediation session, which is scheduled for tomorrow at 12:00pm. As a continued reminder, many aspects of mediation are confidential, and we are not at liberty to divulge all the content of these sessions. Furthermore, while the mediation process continues, the university invites the part-time faculty to return to the classroom to support our students and to ensure that they have a strong end to the semester.
