Strong Tentative Agreement Reached with American Federation of Musicians — Local 802

A Message from Sonya Williams, Vice President for Human Resources

We are extremely pleased to announce that The New School has reached a tentative collective bargaining agreement with the American Federation of Musicians — Local 802, representing our part-time faculty at the School of Jazz and Contemporary Music. This is a strong, fair, six-year contract that increases classroom instruction and lesson rates significantly, strengthens part-time faculty compensation for work done outside the classroom to support our students, and enhances access and flexibility for our part-time faculty by transitioning pay to a biweekly schedule.

We anticipate that the union leadership will recommend this agreement for ratification. The union has agreed to advise the university of the outcome of the ratification vote by May 5, 2023.  We can then begin the work of implementing this agreement.

We want to share our sincere gratitude to the members of both the union and university bargaining teams for their commitment to reaching a fair and timely agreement that allows our community to move forward fully focused on continuing to provide our students with an exceptional academic experience.
