Update on Discussions with Unions on Campus: University Is Ready to Progress Negotiations

The New School is committed to engaging in good-faith contract discussions with unions on campus, including SENS-UAW Local 7902 and SHENS-UAW Local 7902. The university bargaining team is ready and eager to begin constructive and collaborative discussions to reach contracts that recognize and reward the hard work of all our employees.

We believe it is important that we meet as soon as possible to allow sufficient time to exchange proposals and identify and reach agreements on matters important to the union.

That is why on May 11, the university notified SHENS-UAW Local 7902, the union representing our Student Health Employees, that we are ready to begin contract negotiations now. Unfortunately, the union informed us that they are not available for an initial meeting until July 10. Similarly, on June 1, the university notified SENS-UAW Local 7902, representing Academic Student Workers, that we are ready to begin negotiating towards a renewal contract. The union informed us that it is not able to meet for six more weeks—asking for an initial call on July 14.

While we are disappointed that the start of bargaining is delayed, we will continue to make ourselves available and look to begin discussions with the union leadership as soon as possible. You can stay updated on our Union Negotiations at The New School page and by following @knowournewschool on Twitter and Instagram.
