Update on Bargaining with SHENS-UAW Local 7902, Student Health Employees
On September 11, the university bargaining team met with SHENS-UAW Local 7902, the union representing our Student Health Employees.
Progress on Certain Proposals
The university came to Monday’s meeting prepared to engage in productive discussions with updated proposals for a successor collective bargaining agreement.
The union presented proposals on union leave, non-discrimination, and the timeframe of the renewed agreement. The union also offered new proposals on part-time faculty designation for select union members and a new student loan program. The university will carefully consider these proposals and respond.
During the session, we also discussed the union’s proposal on staffing language. The university proposed convening an internal working group composed of two union committee members and two university committee members to study staffing and report back to the larger committees before the next bargaining session. The union has declined the proposed working group.
Availability to Bargain
The SHENS collective bargaining agreement expired on August 9. It is our hope that we can have productive discussions that move us closer to a new agreement so the SHENS members can enjoy an enhanced benefits and economic package.
Our next scheduled bargaining session with SHENS is Oct 2nd, and we have confirmed additional sessions on October 16th and November 6th. As always, the university stands ready and available to meet sooner, more frequently, and for longer sessions.
