The Either/Or Ensemble, Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts’ Spring 2010 Visiting Artists in Music, presents a series of concerts and open rehearsals in February and March. Either/Or is a leading New York-based new music ensemble performing works by emerging composers as well as classics of the avant-garde and experimental music traditions. In February cutting-edge Israeli composer Chaya Czernowin will join Either/Or for a concert devoted to her music. Czernowin’s compositions have been performed at more than 40 festivals throughout the world.
An ensemble that plays by its own rules,, writes New York Times critic Allan Kozinn. This is a world where pure sound and texture are of greater interest than form and syntax…. Works in the Either/Or repertory are just as likely to be governed by game theory as by standard notions of musical structure.,
On Thursday February 25, at 8:00 p.m., guest composer Chaya Czernowin will discuss her music, along with a live performance of musical excerpts and multi-media presentation of her operas. On Friday, Feb. 26 at 8:00 p.m., Either/Or Ensemble performs works by Chaya Czernowin: Ina (1988), Anea Crystal (2008), Dam sheon hachol (1992), and Die Kreuzung (1995). Both of these performances will be at the Tenri Cultural Institute, 43A West 13th St. between 5th and 6th Ave. Admission is free for New School students, faculty, and staff.
