Drama to Present Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle

The New School for Drama presents Bertolt Brecht’s The Caucasian Chalk Circle as the second offering of its FIRST LOOK performance series. The play looks at two women who lay claim to the same child. In this parable, Brecht advocates the idea that resources should go to those best able to make use of them and asks the question, will true justice be rendered?

FIRST LOOK presents performances of classic and modern works staged in a final rehearsal atmosphere, with minimal sets, lights, costumes, and props. The production features second-year acting students and is directed by Johanna McKeon.

A Drama League Directing Fellow, McKeon comes to Drama from the Williamstown Theatre Festival, where she directed the premiere of Ann Washburn’s I Have Loved Strangers, as well as workshops of The Liddy Plays by Brooke Berman and The Stonewater Rapture by Doug Wright. She has also directed at the Vineyard and Ontological-Hysteric theatres in New York City. McKeon is currently associate director of the Green Day musical, American Idiot, which will appear on Broadway later this spring.

Performances are Thursday through Saturday, February 25-27, at 8:00 p.m., with a matinee on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. They will take place at The New School for Drama Theater, 151 Bank Street, 3rd floor. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Reservations are recommended; call Ticket Central at 212.279.4200 or visit www.ticketcentral.com.
