Come Dance with Me Lang’s Annual Spring Dance Performance is Approaching

The Eugene Lang College Dance Department presents its annual Spring Dance Performance on Friday, April 30, and Saturday, May 1, at 8:00 p.m. at the Ailey Citigroup Theater, 405 West 55th Street.

The performance is the culmination of the yearlong residency of Jim May, artistic director of the Sokolow Theater Dance Ensemble. To commemorate the centennial of the birth of renowned American choreographer and modern theater dance creator Anna Sokolow, May has worked with students to reconstruct her groundbreaking work Lyric Suite. This piece premiered in 1953 at the 92nd Street and has not been performed in 25 years. Creating the work, Sokolow drew from her years as a soloist, using each section of the piece to examine, without narrative, a broad range of human emotions through the use of walks, lunges, runs, and falls. The reconstruction of Lyric Suite was made possible by American Masterpieces: Dance, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, which is administered by the New England Foundation for the Arts with Dance/USA.

The performance also features original dance works by faculty members Rebecca Stenn, Takehiro Ueyama, and Karla Wolfangle, and student choreographed works. All pieces are performed by students of Eugene Lang College. Admission is $5; and free to all students and New School faculty, staff, and alumni with ID.
