Drama Playwrights Sweep 2010 Samuel French Play Festival (Again!) Five Make It To Semi-Finals
Out of a record number of more than 880 submissions, five semi-finalists from The New School for Drama were among 40 selected from individuals, playwriting workshops, university theater programs, and professional companies from around the world. The five New School playwrights are:
- E.J.C. Calvert (’10), The Bear
- Paul David Young (’09), Christians Having Sex in Silence
- Josh Beerman (’11), A History of Kites
- J. Julian Christopher (’05), Schwarz! (Hansel und Gretel)
- Jessica Hinds (’11), What Dies Inside Us While We Live
These plays will be presented at the 35th Annual Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row in New York City from July 13 through July18.
The week-long festival features a full program of plays performed each night where a panel of judges select which plays move to the finals. Six plays will be selected in the final round for publication and licensing by Samuel French, Inc.
Drama playwrights have been well-represented in past Samuel French festivals, having many entries participate as semi-finalists and finalists. Winners include: Bekah Brunstetter (’07), Drama’s associate director Matthew Kelty (’02), Kitt Lavoie (’01), Gabe McKinley (’09), Janine Nabers (’08), and Ted Nusbaum (’06).
