Jazzmeia Horn Lives Up to Her Name New School Jazz Student Wins Downbeat’S 33rd Annual Student Music Award
New School Jazz student Jazzmeia Horn received DownBeat honors in the magazine’s 33rd annual student music awards in the Undergraduate College Vocal Jazz Soloist category. The awards were announced in DownBeat’s June issue, which is scheduled to hit the stands on May 18.
Only three months into her first semester at New School Jazz, Horn organized a New School student trio featuring Javier Santiago, piano; Nadav Lachishe, bass and Cory Cox on drums to produce a demo recording to enter into the national competition. Horn recorded her submissions, which included Truman Capote and Harold Arlen’s A Sleeping Bee,, Burton Lane and Frank Loesser’s I Hear Music,, and Dave Frishberg’s Peel Me a Grape,, in the school’s recording studio.
