Peasants Into Citizens: Urban Villages within the Chinese City of Shenzhen

On Tuesday, April 27 at 12:00 p.m., at final faculty research lunchtime presentation for the semester, hosted by the Office of the Provost, Jonathan Bach, associate professor of International Affairs will explore the urban villages in the booming southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, China. This free event will take place on Tuesday, April 27, at 12:00 p.m. in the Orozco Room, 66 West 12th Street, 7th floor.

Bach’s talk Peasants into Citizens: Urban Villages in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone” examines the role of former rural collectives that have been encircled by the city, the so-called “villages in the city.” Field research for this project was supported in part by the Faculty Development Fund and the India China Institute.

This series includes presentations from faculty across the university, with an emphasis on research that has been developed during sabbaticals or with the support of university research grants. New School faculty, students, and staff are invited to attend these hour-long presentations.
