Summer Stardom: Environmental Studies Internships on Film

It’s hard to keep track of New School students over the summer. While many depart the city for distant locations, a number of undergraduates in the Environmental Studies program participate in summer internships in and around the metropolitan area, giving them an opportunity to apply the previous semester’s knowledge in a professional workplace and build skills that will enrich future coursework and career prospects.

Over the past two summers, Communications and External Affairs took up the challenge of filming several Environmental Studies interns, meeting them on location and hearing first-hand how their intellectual framework is being shaped by these opportunities.

Interning UNIS brought extra dimension to my understanding of sustainable fashion,, said George Gladstone, a junior at Parsons The New School for Design and Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts. Producing garments locally means local fabric, local design, local manufacturing, and, of course, local marketing. The cost to the environment is far lower and the benefits for New Yorkers are tremendous.,

The short film of Gladstone’s internship in sustainable fashion is available online, as are films four of his classmates on a range of environmental issues, including solar power, food production, community farming, and river ecology.
