The New School at 91: Casey Nelson Blake on the Arts as Social Research

The 91st anniversary of the founding of The New School will be commemorated on Thursday, October 28, at 5:30 p.m., in the Orozco Room, 66 West 12th Street, 7th floor, with a lecture by Casey Nelson Blake, professor of history and American studies at Columbia University.

A century ago, American artists and intellectuals sought to define a new public role for the arts in a modern democratic society, emphasizing higher education as a resource for a more participatory civic life. Blake, a scholar of the arts and intellectual life in the United States, will examine the ideas about art, social research, and democracy that influenced The New School’s founders and early faculty members and consider their implications for progressive education today.

Admission is free, but seating is limited and reservations are required by calling 212.229.5353 or emailing publicprograms@newschool.edu.
