24th Social Research Conference: India’s World

On Tuesday and Wednesday, May 10 and 11, noted experts on India connect the dots between key issues in contemporary Indian life, including the nation’s government, economy, policy, and culture. This public conference engages speakers and audience in conversation, leading to deeper understanding of the ways in which India is influenced by the world, and the world by India.

Writer and anthropologist Amitav Ghosh will deliver the keynote address on Tuesday, May 10, at 6:00 p.m. in Tishman Auditorium, 66 West 12th Street.

Amitav Ghosh was born in Calcutta in 1956, and spent his childhood in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and northern India. He studied in Delhi, Oxford, and Egypt and has taught at a number of Indian and American universities. His books include The Circle of Reason (1986), The Shadow Lines (1988), The Calcutta Chromosome (1995), The Glass Palace (2000), The Hungry Tide (2005), and Sea of Poppies (2008). He was awarded the Prix Médicis étranger for The Circle of Reason, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Ananda Puraskar for The Shadow Lines, the Arthur C. Clarke Award for The Calcutta Chromosome, and the 2001 Grand Prize for Fiction at the Frankfurt International e-Book Awards for The Glass Palace. Ghosh has written for the New Yorker, Granta, The New Republic, and the New York Times. His forthcoming book is River of Smoke.

The conference continues on Wednesday, May 11, at 9:30 a.m. in Tishman Auditorium, where a day-long session will be held.
