Professor Curates Cory Arcangel: Pro Tools
Cory Arcangel’s new show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, which opened today, has been all over the news in recent weeks. And one of the people who made the show possible is one of the New School’s own: Christiane Paul, the exhibition’s curator and a faculty member in the graduate Media Studies program.
The adjunct curator of new media arts at the museum, Paul was instrumental in selecting the range of works represented in Pro Tools, Arcangel’s first major New York show. The 32-year-old Brooklyn artist works across a wide range of media, including video games, single channel video, performance, music composition, sculpture, and works on paper. The resulting mix is an exploration of the role that technology plays in culture, an idea that particularly resonates with Paul.
Cory Arcangel’s work is a critique of technology that does not deny the appeal and seduction of technological product,, Paul said. At the core of his projects lies an interest in ‘the human factor’ , the ways express ourselves through technological tools and platforms, from Photoshop to YouTube.,
