Out of a record number of over 1,000 submissions, four semi-finalists from The New School for Drama were among 40 selected from individuals, playwriting workshops, university theater programs, and professional companies from around the world. The four New School playwrights are:
- First Breath After Total Devastation by Victor Lesniewski ’10
- Mountain Song by Josh Beerman ’11
- Screen by Nick Gandiello ’11
- The Truth About Christmas by Daniel Pearle ’12.
These plays will be presented at the 36th Annual Samuel French Off-Off Broadway Short Play Festival at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row in New York City from July 19 through July 24.
The week-long festival features a full program of plays performed each night where a panel of judges select which plays move to the finals. Six plays will be selected in the final round for publication and licensing by Samuel French, Inc.
Drama playwrights have been well-represented in past Samuel French festivals, having many entries participate as semi-finalists and finalists. Winners include: E.J.C. Calvert (’10), Bekah Brunstetter (’07), Drama’s associate director Matthew Kelty (’02), Kitt Lavoie (’01), Gabe McKinley (’09), Janine Nabers (’08), and Ted Nusbaum (’06).
