Mannes Student Alexander Bauer Named 2011-2012 Presser Scholar
Alexander Bauer, a senior majoring in piano at Mannes College The New School for Music has been chosen to receive the Presser Undergraduate Scholar Award. The award is administered by the Presser Foundation, and presented yearly by the Mannes faculty to an outstanding student majoring in music and finishing their junior year.
Alex studies piano at Mannes with Nina Svetlanova. Last summer, he traveled with Ms. Svetlanova to Suolahti, Finland for a two-week summer piano festival. He has performed in the 2011 Mannes Festival ‘ Liszt: A Life in Music; the 2009 Mannes Festival ‘ The Mendelssohn Salon and in 2008 performed in concert with the Breckenridge Festival Orchestra, playing the first movement of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. He spent three years as a member of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, including concert tours of Argentina and Uruguay in 2007.
Along with his outstanding musical talent, Alex has demonstrated remarkable leadership abilities in his years at Mannes. When observing his fellow students in an art history class struggling due to English not being their first language, Alex developed study outlines for these students ensuring their successful completion of the course.
The Presser Foundation is recognized for its longstanding support of music and music education in the United States. Founded in 1916 by Theodore Presser, who founded the publishing firm that bears his name, as well as the music magazine, Etude, the Presser Foundation provides support to students and to teachers.
