The News Around the Block: Student Voices from the Block Party

At last week’s Block Party, New School News caught up with new and returning students to find out what brought them to campus this year.

Natalia Olivares, Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts
Hometown: Washington Heights, NY
I love New York, and I love having the city as my campus!

Ihouma Atanga, School of Media Studies
Hometown: Yaoundé, Cameroon
I knew the Media Studies program was perfect for me, in every sense of the word. Media Studies is a great mixture of theory and practice, it’s just what I wanted.

Trey Bedingfield, Michelle Lin, S.G. Kim, Parsons School of Design
Hometowns: Jupiter, Fla; New York City; Seoul, South Korea
Trey: I came for fashion design.
Michelle: New York City’s just a great place to cultivate artistic connections.
S.K.: I wanted to be in New York, so I came here!

Laura Farrell, Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts
Hometown: Philadelphia area
I transferred to The New School because I wanted to be in a city, and I wanted to get involved. Here I can make a difference in so many causes both inside and outside the university.

Mat Kennedy, New School for Public Engagement
Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
I went to Lang for undergrad, and then went to teach in Korea, now I’m back to get my master’s.

Edward Lee, Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts
Hometown: Lower East Side, New York City
At Lang, I can study all the arts, and study history at the same time. I couldn’t do that at other schools.

Lilah Horwitz, Parsons School of Design
Hometown: Iceland, no, that’s not true, it’s Seattle.,
I like The New School because I like old things, it’s The New School for Old Things!
