The New School Joins the Fight to Save Student Aid
The nation’s economic woes are placing a tremendous burden on every sector of the economy. As the deficit grows, the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, aka “super committee,, has been charged by Congress with finding $1.2 trillion dollars to cut from the federal budget by this Thanksgiving.
There is serious concern that, as they have in the past, legislators may turn their blue pens against federal financial aid programs for college students. Congress has already removed $30 million from the Pell grant program in recent budget deals. At The New School, 35 percent of undergraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents receive Pell grant support.
Enter Save Student Aid., In the face of this threat, the nation’s colleges and universities are mounting a national mobilization to urge Congress to look elsewhere for these cuts, and The New School has signed on. Everyone affiliated with The New School ‘ including students, their parents, faculty, staff, neighbors, and other members of our community ‘ is encouraged to sign this statement created by the Student Aid Alliance: http://action.studentaidalliance.org/5371/save-student-aid-statement-support/.
If you feel particularly eloquent, also contact your Congressional representatives and explain in your own words why it is vital for the federal government to help make college more affordable.
