Drama Alum’s Play Premieres with the Atlantic Theater Company
CQ/CX, the latest play by Drama alum Gabe McKinley ’09, is set to make its world premiere off-Broadway with the Atlantic Theater Company on January 25 and running through March 11, 2012. The production will take place at Signature Theatre Company’s Peter Norton Space in midtown, while the Atlantic finishes renovations on their theater in Chelsea.
In the play, Jay, an up-and-coming reporter at the New York Times has dreams of becoming a famous journalist. But in a flash, they come crashing down when he becomes the center of a plagiarism scandal. McKinley weaves a revealing and complex story about the collateral damage of unchecked ambition and compounded lies. In this new play inspired by current events, truth becomes slippery and racial tensions reach a boiling point.
This isn’t the first of McKinley’s plays to play in New York City. His critically acclaimed play Extinction, which opened in Los Angeles in 2009, transferred the following year to the prominent Cherry Lane Theater off-Broadway.
McKinley’s other plays include The Kitchen Sink Play, Welcome Home Rock Rogers, and Floodplains. His short play The Grave was a winner of the Samuel French Off Off Broadway Short Play Festival, and his play Hero’s Grave was read at The Old Vic in London.
