Verbal Velocity: Lang Prof’s Piece Debuts at Lincoln Center

A new piece co-created and directed by faculty member Cecilia Rubino debuted this week at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center. Structured like an open-mic slam, Slam 102: Verbal Velocity brings together three poets to explore new poetry genres. In its previous incarnation, Slam 101, poets tackled list, declarative, and persona poems. This year, they’ll craft ekphrastic, personification, and narrative poems for a live audience, who serve as judges for the competition.

Rubino, an assistant professor of Theater at Eugene Lang College The New School for Liberal Arts, will direct the performance, which features poets Darian Dauchan, Erik Maldonado, and Shanelle Gabriel, accompanied by D.J. Jenna. Audience members are encouraged to participate, creating original works on the spot. During its final performance on January 13 at 11 a.m., the live NYC audience will be connected with audiences in Oklahoma and Vermont through a live interactive video link, sponsored by Cisco International.

The performance will return to the Walter Reade Theater for a run March 13-16. For more information, visit http://new.lincolncenter.org/live/index.php/mta-school-series-spring#top.
