The Twelfth Annual Mannes Beethoven Institute Begins June 3

Thomas Sauer, Director of the Mannes Beethoven Institute, will perform on Tuesday, June 5, Wednesday, June 6, and Thursday, June 7.

From June 3-10, Mannes College The New School for Music will present the Twelfth Annual Mannes Beethoven Institute, exploring Beethoven’s sonatas, piano trios, and string quartets in a week of intensive study and public concerts featuring some of the world’s leading performers and scholars of Beethoven.

Public performances June 5-10 will be held at Mannes College The New School for Music at 150 West 85th Street, and will feature students of the institute as well as the distinguished faculty including pianists Yuri Kim, Victor Rosenbaum, Thomas Sauer, Ignat Solzhenitsyn and Diane Walsh; violinists Ara Gregorian and Soovin Kim; cellists Colin Carr and Michael Kannen; and musicologists Scott Burnham and William Rothstein.

Faculty concerts include:

  • Tuesday, June 5, 8:00 p.m.
    All Beethoven: Piano Trio, Op. 70, No. 1 (“Ghost”); Violin Sonata, Op. 47 (“Kreutzer”).
    Artists: Colin Carr, Soovin Kim, Thomas Sauer, Ignat Solzhenitsyn. With spoken introduction by Scott Burnham of Princeton University.
  • Wednesday, June 6, 8:00 p.m.
    All Beethoven: Piano Sonata, Op. 54; Duo “with Eyeglasses Obbligato”; Piano Quartet, Op. 16; Piano Sonata, Op. 53 (“Waldstein”).
    Artists: Ara Gregorian, Michael Kannen, Soovin Kim, Victor Rosenbaum, Thomas Sauer, Ignat Solzhenitsyn.
  • Thursday, June 7, 8:00 p.m.
    All Beethoven: Romance in F, Op. 50; Cello Sonata, Op. 69; “Diabelli” Variations, Op. 120.
    Artists: Colin Carr, Ara Gregorian, Yuri Kim, Thomas Sauer, Diane Walsh.

Admission is $20; and tickets are available in advance at www.newschool.edu/mannes/beethoven-institute and at the door on the evening of the performances. Students of the Institute will perform on Saturday, June 9 at 7:00 and Sunday, June 10 beginning at 1:00 p.m. Admission is free.
