Health Class at Summer Camp
This August, students from Eugene Lang College have been helping some local New York City teens learn healthy habits. Every Wednesday in the month, a half dozen Lang students have been travelling to Phipps Community Development Corp. summer camp sites in the South Bronx.
The summer program is part of a wide-ranging initiative called Health Class 2.0 that brings together students working with professor Natalia Mehlman Pertzela. It continues the work the students began in the spring 2012 semester (and will keep up in the fall), the students led the campers in a variety of exercises and wellness seminars that go far beyond playing dodgeball.
“Essentially we go into P.E. class with a theme for the day that is beyond just physical wellness,” Professor Petrzela told The New School Free Press as part of a story earlier this year. “Making choices, redefining fat, redefining love” are some of the program’s goals.
