The New School News

Weekly Flashback, April 8-12

Another week, another roundup; check out what went down at The New School.

Webby Webby Where Are You?

When we launched the refurbished Newschool.edu in December, we knew it was good. It’s eye-catching, it’s informative, and hey! Those boxes move. Now, we have proof of the website’s excellence: this week’s nomination for a webby award in the School/University category. Right now, competition is heating up between The New School and the University of Chicago. Login and vote to make it’s a sure win. No narwhal goes down to a phoenix!

“How To”…Get Out the Vote

NSPE assistant professor Jeff Smith puts bees to shame with his work ethic. Though a minor campaign infringement during his 2004 senate bid for Missouri ended his career as an elected official, Smith hasn’t lost his interest in politics. After appearing on MSNBC’s The Cycle and contributing to the blog The Recovering Politician, Smith gave an interview Tuesday with WCBS 880 on his new course “Campaign Management Boot Camp.” Listen to the radio segment here, or find out more about the four-session course here.

The Strong Arm

New School alumna Mary Jo White is tough. Which is a good thing, now that she’s tasked with keeping Wall Street in line. The Senate confirmed White’s nomination as the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday. Marc Jacobs and Bradley Cooper better watch out; White might just make the top of the list of “Best Alum to Rub Elbows With.”

Put My Hands Up, They’re Playing My Song

Design students from Parsons know no bounds when it comes to creating. That’s why it was no surprise—though quite a feat—to learn that 2012 Interior Design alumnus Lee Gibson was picked for a second time to design a new club concept in Milan. After winning last year’s Milan Furniture Fair competition, Gibson also had the opportunity to design two high-end bars in Singapore. Fingers crossed The New School makes the VIP list.

#Summer?

Photos of reflective sunglasses, playing dogs, and un-tanned bare skin bombarded every New York Instagramer’s feed on Tuesday. Unfortunately, it was like one lick of the ice cream cone before it falls—plop—on the ground. What was today’s New School Instagram post? Umbrellas. Grumble. Follow us for better days ahead.
